Information about Lastovo

Island of Lastovo is located on the southern part of Croatia (Dalmatia) with natural beauties, clean sea, rich with fish. The green forests and 46 cultivated valleys (mostly vineyards and olive trees) are spread over its 56 km². The Lastovo Island is surrounded by 46 smaller islands and cliffs with untouched nature and numerous bays.
There are more than 30 churches and chapels on the island, some of them originating from ancient times. The very name Lastovo came from ancient times too, first known as Ladesta from the early IV century B.C. The Romans named it Augusta Insula, meaning The Emperor's Island. Later the name was changed into Ladeston and finally Lastovo.
In the year 2000 the 1000th anniversary of the Lastovo village was celebrated.
The island has Mediterranean climate with mild and humid winters and warm, dry and lenghty sunny summers.
There are several beautiful bays on the island, the Zaklopatica bay, Skrivena Luka (Portorus) bay, Velo and Malo Lago bays, etc. The other attractive places are Lastovo village, Lučica, Saint Mihovil, Ubli, Pasadur, Prehodišća, Saplun Island, etc.

The Lastovo village is Communal center, there is the main church of Saints Kuzma and Damjan (St. Cosmas and Damien), with many valuable paintings and relics, which is open for sightseeing. There is also school, museum, ambulance, Post office, Tourist office, bank, then shops, café bars, etc.
Lastovo stairs made by stones, Lastovo chimneys and Poklad Carnival Event are especially interesting.
During Summers, there are many  music events and folklore evenings where the traditional  Dance of Lastovo's Pokladari is performed.
Among various music events, Lastovo Night is scheduled on 28 of July, Lastovo - Island of Music events are scheduled from 8 to 11 of August, etc.

Ubli is Lastovo island's main port. Ferryboats and high-speed boats from Split and other places arrive there. The asphalt road is connecting Ubli with Lastovo (10 km), Ubli with Pasadur (3 km), Lastovo with Skrivena Luka (7 km), Lastovo with Zaklopatica (3 km), etc. The petrol station for vehicles and yachts is stationed at Ubli. Harbor Master office, Custom office, Post office and Jadrolinija office are in Ubli too.
